Of course Belfast has always known how great it is. It has only decided to brag about it a little more recently. And there’s plenty worth bragging about, from the sedate elegance of the Botanic Gardens to the lush décor of the Crown Bar (the only bar owned by the UK’s guardians of heritage, the National Trust!). Let’s face it, any city that renames an airport after a sporting hero like George Best is never going to be shy about its pride and enthusiasm.
For visitors, the city on the river Lagan is a treasure trove of the unexpected, by day and night. Over thirty public works of art have been commissioned since the mid ‘90s. Beautiful Edwardian and Victorian buildings on one hand, then a 7,000 seater ice hockey arena at the Odyssey! The Arts have always played centre stage, from the Grand Opera House and Lyric Theatre to the Waterfront Hall and a host of other performance venues. And of course Belfast has always been popular with shoppers, particularly with the recent addition of several top class retail developments. Small wonder that big little Belfast is one of Europe’s most popular city destinations.
